Mercedes-Benz at Pt. England Nature Reserve

Mercedes-Benz – Days of Caring

A big thank you to the amazing team at Mercedes-Benz in Auckland who turned out for four days across February and March to roll up their sleeves at Pt. England Nature Reserve in Glen Innes as part of their Days of Caring. Due to the efforts of Mercedes-Benz volunteers, we were able to protect the 1,800 young trees planted last year by completely clearing the area of invasive pest plants such as privet, stinking iris, nutsedge and blackberry as well as releasing kikuyu grass from around 1,800 young trees so that they don’t get strangled while still so young. This is extremely important work and many young native trees would not survive without this aftercare.

With the help of volunteers like Mercedes-Benz, Conservation Volunteers New Zealand will support the Tamaki Estuary restoration project by enhancing the ecology through native planting, weed and pest management to particularly degraded environments alongside the Omaru Creek, Wai-o-Taiki Bay nature reserve and Pt. England Reserve Estuary margin. The Tamaki Estuary is a beautiful site but known to be one of the most polluted waterways in Auckland. The area is also home to one of our nationally focused ‘Threatened Species’, the longfin eel. Eels are a strong indicator species of waterway health. Recovery efforts for the longfin eel include riparian restoration through clearing pest plants from riparian margins, planting riparian margins to create shading, ground cover for cleared areas and increasing diversity. The Tamaki Restoration Project will go a long way towards protecting the waterways in the area and the habitat of the longfin eel and other species.

Mercedes-Benz were a great team who tackled the difficult task at hand with energy and enthusiasm and we loved working with them. Their positive attitude and willingness to make a change for nature made it a fun and productive few days. We hope to see more volunteers like this participating on our Conservation Projects across New Zealand.
