Corporate Planters Grow Wild!

8,445 rākau planted in 2024’s World Environment Day Corporate Planting Challenge

Each year, on World Environment Day, CVNZ invites corporate volunteers from around the motu to take part in a high-energy, fiercely competitive tree-planting challenge. The competition is simple: teams have just two hours to plant as many rākau (trees, shrubs and grasses) as they can.

It’s a feel-good day for all involved. In addition to plenty of prizes, trophies for the winners and great food, planters can rest east knowing they’ve helped restore te taiao (the natural world). There are so many benefits to planting native rākau: the plants will grow into shade, habitat and food for native birds, bugs and lizards. They’ll stabilise the soil, filter out contaminants from our waterways and help make our regions climate resilient.

We’re always blown away by what the teams manage to achieve in two hours. Here’s how things went down on the day:

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland:

Ten teams battled it out on the Papakura Stream Restoration Project in Tāmaki Makaurau. Altogether, 4,411 new rākau were planted in the two hours!

Teams from 2degrees (two teams), FedEx, Spirex Sarco, IAG, Mondelez, Go Well Consulting, Concentrix and Lion gave the winners stiff competition but Accenture took the win with a staggering 160 plants per person! A huge thank you to to our support crew from CityCare Water, Auckland Council and our project partner at Donald’s Farm.

Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington:

Thanks to the determined planters who turned up on Friday to Belmont Regional Park. This is a new planting site for CVNZ and we were excited to break ground with our challengers. In total, 481 plants went in the ground during Friday’s challenge.

Three teams competed for the trophy – two teams from Z Energy and a team from Accenture. Z Energy’s B team took the win.

Ōtautahi Christchurch:

Six teams put their spades to work in the Red Zone. Competitors were treated to nature-themed tunes from musician Chris Williams as they worked hard to plant 1,983 plants.

Switched On has won the past seven planting challenges in Ōtautahi, and this year was no exception. Switched On dug their way to victory with 66 plants per person. Advanced Landscapes and Lane Neave were hot on their heels, with 2degrees, Z Energy and IAG also putting in a mammoth effort. A huge thank you to the CCC Red Zone ranger team for their help on the day.

Punakaiki West Coast
Last but not least, we had four teams take up the challenge on the wild and beautiful West Coast. They put 1,558 plants in the ground.

Development West Coast, Liddell Construction (part of Isaac Construction) and ElectroNet all planted valiantly but Vector Control Services (West Coast Regional Council) took the trophy home with 60 plants per person.

A huge thank you to staff, volunteers and supporters who helped us pull this event off. On behalf of CVNZ and the planet, THANK YOU!
