Chris Watson, Field Coordinator, Wadeson Island, Conservation Volunteers New Zealand

Chris was raised hunting and fishing around the stunning South and Stewart Islands. Years spent working in manufacturing, logistics and retail, and years of tertiary study in Information Science and IT, reignited his love for exploring and the outdoors. On joining CVNZ’s Conservation Work Skills programme, Chris discovered that he is deeply interested in and passionate about securing a better future for our natural world.

His role as Field Coordinator for the Wadeson Island Project gives Chris an opportunity to direct all the skills he has accumulated in life towards doing something positive which he loves. Chris feels very fortunate to be part of creating the beautiful places that are so much fun to explore, and to work with all these cool people who have so many new things for him to learn.

Most days you can find him in the field with his team, where they’re busy doing everything from planting native species to removing pesky weeds. Chris states, ‘If you asked me what my favourite book is, I’d be tempted to say the ‘Plant Me Instead’ booklet published by DOC and the local councils!’
