English Ivy

.

English Ivy (Hedera Helix) has been used to cover walls and fences for centuries. In Europe there are natural checks and balances for ivy, but here in New Zealand our native species have no defence. It is a climbing vine that grips tightly to surfaces, eventually forming hard woody trunks as thick as your leg. The weight of an adult ivy can drag down fully grown trees and convert dense forests into Ivy deserts.
