Horopito, or pepper tree grows mostly at higher altitudes and is the first to grow after a land disturbance. The hot peppery taste of its leaves have strong anti-fungal properties, leading it to be used in many pharmaceuticals. It is also used in cooking to add a hot peppery flavour.
- Used in a range of products to treat Candida fungal infections.
- 1-2 leaves in a cup of boiling water can be used to treat thrush, tooth-ache and stomach ache. Hence it’s other name ‘Māori pain killer’.
