Planning your Summer Holiday and wanting to do something different and meaningful this year? Why not join our Summer Volunteering Getaway to restore habitats, make new friends and be immersed in nature? Enjoy a meaningful getaway in Punakaiki, Christchurch, Wellington or in Auckland while supporting the wonderful conservation efforts being made across Aotearoa. Here are some locations where you can get involved:
In Auckland we’re bringing biodiversity back to the city’s many parks and beaches. Our projects vary from week to week. You could be spending the week in our house in Titirangi, a part of the city with great walks and hikes through giant nikau palms and near-tropical rainforest, while volunteering in the Waitakere Ranges. Or you could be spending the week in our house in Atiu Creek Regional Park with stunning views of the Kaipara Harbour while helping with our restoration programme by removing large weeds and propogating native seedlings in our on-site native plant nursery.
In Pōneke/Wellington we are re-growing the city’s green heart so it’s once more a haven for our native birds, reptiles and insects. There are a great range of projects to be involved in including protecting and restoring native habitats our reserves, streams and beaches. Our accommodation in the historic Truby King House in Melrose has amazing views of the South Coast and is an awesome base for exploring the capital’s many great cafes, museums and natural spaces. PUNAKAIKI, PAPAROA NATIONAL PARK
At Punakaiki we’re transforming a former farm and mining site into native rainforest to help preserve and enhance the breeding habitat of the Tāiko Westland Petrel. This forest and coastline area is the only place in the world where they come to breed each year. Our project site is beside a spectacular wild West Coast beach which is a fully protected marine reserve, and right next to the amazing Pancake Rocks and Paparoa National Park with its many great nature walks. It’s also beside the Nikau Scientific Reserve — one of the few remaining original sand-plain forests in the country.
Water is the source of all life and here in Christchurch we’re replanting and restoring important parks, wetlands and reserves to better protect the region’s waterways and its many native birds. Our base is the historic Paterson House, where a number of great rides and walks lead you up onto the Port Hills and spectacular views of the city and the mountains.
Bring your mates along on a volunteering getaway on one of our awesome project sites to restore habitats, meet new friends and be immersed in nature!
