Last week, on Friday 4th June, CVNZ ran our fifth annual Corporate Tree Planting Challenge to celebrate World Environment Day and it was (mostly) a huge success. Heavy rains and flooding meant our Christchurch event was postponed but the sun came out in Auckland and Wellington. Our corporate volunteers achieved amazing results with a grand total of 3,835 trees planted across New Zealand in just a couple of hours.
The competition was fierce in New Zealand, with 10 teams competing to plant the greatest number of native grasses, shrubs and trees that they could, within a two hour period. Our corporate green thumbs from 2 Degrees, WSTAR. 2 teams from Mondelez, HP, Concentrix and HSBC planted an incredible 3,235 trees at Sanders Reserve in Paremoremo. A new record for the most trees we’ve ever planted in a single event. Mondelez New Zealand took home the trophy by planting a whopping 620 native trees.
In Wellington, Able tech, Concentrix and a third team from the community put 600 trees in the ground on a very tricky, but beautiful, site at Tawatawa Reserve in Island Bay.
This amazing contribution from our corporate supporters will go a long way towards improving the environmental health of these parks, reserves and waterways. Native trees filter contaminants before they reach our waterways, as well as provide shade, food and habitat for our native species. The participation of these teams has also assisted us in raising funds so that we can continue to do this important work. We had such a great time on this years event and can’t wait to have everyone back again next year.
Congratulations to the following teams who took away the winning title for their site by providing both quality and quantity in their planting:
- Auckland – Mondelez New Zealand
- Wellington – Abletech
- Christchurch – TBC
Conservation Volunteers New Zealand extends warm thanks to 2 Degrees, Mondelez New Zealand, Concentrix, WStar, HSBC, HP, Abletech and our community volunteers for their participation in this year’s challenge.
