Growing up on a farm on the Barrytown flats, near Punakaiki, has given Sharon an interest and appreciation of the local environment.
Sharon is the Nursery Coordinator for Punakaiki and it’s her dream job. She has completed an apprenticeship in Nursery Production. Sharon feels privileged to have such an enjoyable role and the opportunity to be part of a positive team and exciting projects.
The world’s only breeding colony of Westland Black petrel (tāiko), is located, in the valley behind the Punakaiki Nursery. Sharon’s two uncles were involved with their discovery as a new species in the 1940s.
Sharon started a plant nursery at home in 2009. This was in conjunction with the start of CVNZ Punakaiki Coastal Restoration Project. CVNZ didn’t have a nursery initially, so Sharon helped with some of the plant supply for the first few years.
